How Lent Figures into My Quest for Simplicity

Note:  This post has more to do with my belief system than crafting, so if you don’t find this type of topic of interest, please feel free to pass, but I hope you won’t.

If you have been a subscriber to my blog, you may already know that my “One Little Word” for 2012 is Simplicity.  I have really made an effort this year to simplify my life in just about every aspect; home, health, crafting, creating, work, relationships….the whole ball of wax.

Today is the first day of Lent – Ash Wednesday - and over the past couple of weeks I have been praying and searching for the best way for me to celebrate this season.  The traditional purpose of Lent is the penitential preparation of Christians—through prayer, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial for the upcoming Easter season. But most recently believers try to find ways in which to “give” to others rather than deny themselves as a way to concentrate and reflect on the sacrifices of Christ.  So you can imagine my interest when I saw this book:

First, the title grabbed me by the shoulders because it IS my “One Little Word” and secondly, having a structured daily Lenten practice is something I find important to me for my personal growth and spiritual progress.

The author takes each day and presents a series of simple, ordinary acts and turns them into Lenten practices, and thereby leading the reader into a “simpler” way of life; fostering the soul and giving us a greater calm and happiness.  Sounds like the perfect solution for me.

Even if you aren’t a “believer”, this time of year - Springtime – is a perfect time to reflect on the newness of the year – the rebirth of growth and we could all use a little more calm and happiness, right?

Thanks for reading today.  I hope that your day – your Lenten season - brings YOU a calm and happy YOU!

Inspiring Lynn. I think that your simplicity quest is something that we could all use, I sure know I could. There is a lot to be gained by cutting out the excess that creeps in to every area of life. We don't need it, really and truly. Been thinking about this a lot recently and I settled on the phrase He said, "Let your yes be yes and your no be no" it seems so simple but it can be so hard, but I'm trying. Lent is one of those times I often start out good and end up letting it slide, so I'm not actually going to put into words what I'm doing this year, I'm just gonna do it!! Hugs to you!!!

Lynn, thank you so much for sharing this!! I too hope you will be sharing more of the Lord's work through this Lent service. I'm going to try and get my hands on this book at the local bookstore or maybe even in nook version since I have the reader on my phone. Anyhow, I also wanted to thank you and never came back to do so for sharing the book 1,000 gifts here on your blog. I am currently reading it, reading Anne's blog daily, and recording my daily gifts. I am so grateful for you sharing your heart as well as your craft!! Many blessings!!

Well said, Lynn! I am in total agreement with you, and I've been trying to simplify my life as well. No one said it was easy, but in our moments with Him, we can all do it, if we just keep our eyes up! A few moments of meditation a day, just emptying all the "stuff" out of our heads and letting our beliefs in Christ and what He did for us take hold, will help tremendously! Hugz2u and I shall return!! Love to get that book, btw! ;D
