Under the Weather?

Where did we get this saying?  I pondered this question as I was getting ready to post this card.  So I went where everyone goes with questions…”Obi Wan Google”

From what I could ascertain from from Google was that this phrase has nautical origins. When a sailor or other ocean travelers would feel sick, they were generally sent below deck where they were out of the storms atop deck and therefore “under the weather”.  While there are many reasons to feel sick (at sea or otherwise), we still use the term to describe someone not feeling well.  Now I know…and so do you. =)

Heart-Times-Under-the-Weath

I created this little card for a friend that could use some cheer.  Being sick is never fun, but when it keeps you down for longer than a day or two, you really begin to feel like the world is going on without you. It is so nice to be reminded that your friends are pulling for you and haven’t been forgotten.

The layout for this card was inspired from a sketch from the June 2010 Page Maps site.

Using a sweet little umbrella image, I colored with Copic markers – available from i {heart} papers, and layered it on some fun patterned papers from Crate Paper. Beneath the layer of patterned paper is a strip of felt that I die cut using my Ric Rac Scallop Pierceabilities from Spellbinders.

The fun cloud and rainbow chipboard element is from the Cosmo Cricket De Lovely Adhesive Chipboard set.  I also added a few Raindots and I’ve had in my stash for what seems like forever.

So think of those poor sea-sick sailors the next time you use the “under the weather” phase…I know I will.  I hope you aren’t feeling “under the weather”, but rather enjoying the sunshine!

Thanks for peeking in today!
